Jinx is five and he lives in a place called Urwald. His stepdad decides to abandon him in the woods where he can easily get killed. Fortunately for him a wizard finds him and he lets Jinx stay at his house but the condition is that he has to work. Four years later Jinx finally convinces the wizard (Simon) to teach him magic. Only Jinx can already do magic but he doesn’t know he can. He has the ability to read peoples minds. He can also talk to trees and draw on the power of Urwald. A few years pass and he is 12. He sees Simon buy something for a spell. Later that night Simon takes part of Jinx’s life away from him using the ingredient that he bought from the witch. Jinx leaves and he decides to go to a witch’s house to figure out how to get his life back. On the way he meets new people who become his friends. When they get to the witches house she tells them to go to the Bonemaster, an evil wizard who specializes in death magic and curses. They have no choice but to go because his friends want to get their curses off of them and, Jinx wants his life back. Can he figure out how to control the abilities that he has? Can he learn how to do magic? Will he be able to get his life back so he can read minds again?

I liked this book because it’s very entertaining with his friend Efwlyn who has a curse on her that makes her always speak the truth. His other friend, who can’t say his real name, tells him where he is headed, or says where he is from. This book shows that no matter how bad someone is teasing you or calling you names, you can always persevere if you just take risks and stand up for yourself.

Book Review: The False Prince by Jennifer A Nielsen

Screen shot 2014-06-07 at 9.33.15 AM

Sage is a 14-year-old orphan who gets kidnapped. He wakes up to find himself with three more boys the same age. The man who kidnapped them was called Connor and he is a nobleman. He takes them to his home and tells them his plans. He is going to pick one of them to be the long-lost Prince after they have trained. Sage wants to be chosen because he will get killed if he isn’t. The only problem is that he has competition. Two other boys who passionately want the same thing as him. He is trained, whipped, beaten, stabbed, and brought to the edge of his limits. Who will be chosen? Who will survive?

This book has a huge twist to who you think Sage is. I liked this book because it shows how an orphan can become a prince. Similar in reality, how someone who isn’t rich or important can become someone who is known all around the world. This book also shows that being who you are can be hard. You should read this book it is amazing.

Book Review: Dead is the New Black by Marlene Perez

Night shade was definitely weird.

Daisy Gordiano’s family is all psychic except Daisy. But she and her friend Ryan try to investigate the mysterious dead girl that disappeared. Daisy tries to find more about Samantha (her enemy or friend) by joining the cheerleader team because Samantha recently has been wearing all black and a mysterious old necklace that she never takes off. More and more cheerleaders on her team are being attacked. And Daisy was at every place every time each crime happened. Daisy is thinking that there is a soul sucking vampire that’s attacking girls all over night shade. On the other hand, Daisy is not only trying to solve mysteries but she’s also a terrific chef. While she was cooking one time she slowly discovered her new powers.

Dead is the new black is a great book because I’m always wondering what’s going to happen next. And if you’re a person who likes mysteries this is the book for you. I recommend this book for girls ages 11 and older.
